[3] neither a relative nor a friend – 非亲非故 an idiom, figuratively translates to unrelated to one another in any way but I thought the literal meaning fit better.

[4] a fool’s dream – 痴人说梦 translates to lunatic ravings/pipe dream.

[5] baring – 赤/裸裸 translates to naked but I wasn’t really sure how it would fit into the sentence.

[6] give up only at the sight of the gallows – 不见棺材不落泪 translates to not shed a tear until one sees the coffin/refuse to be convinced until one is faced with grim reality/unrepentant. Not sure which one fits so I used the one I prefer hehe.
